Log-Sobolev Inequalities and the Renormalisation

Abstract: Log-Sobolev inequalities for probabilitiy measures are strong inequalities with numerous general consequences, including control of the approach to equilibrium of the associated stochastic evolution, hypercontractivity, concentration of measure, transport inequalities, and others. However, proving them remains in general difficult - even when equlibrium correlations are well understood. I will dicuss some of the background and present a new approach to Log-Sobolev inequalities that can be seen as a multiscale generalisation of the method of Bakry-Emery. Our approach relies on the control of an associated PDE well known in renormalisation group theory: the Polchinski equation, a continuous version of Wilson's renomralisation group. I will present some examples. This is joint work with Thierry Bodineu.

Everyone is invited! Join us for coffee and tea in the common room (B448) half an hour before the talk.
