Analysis of simple models of the behavior of resonances under a small applied electric field: stability and instability
Zusammenfassung: When quantum systems are slightly perturbed, eigenvalues representing stationary states often move smoothly. But sometimes the eigenvalues disappear from the real axis. The quantum states are no longer stationary; they decay in time. This is reflected mathematically by the eigenvalues moving off into the complex plane. These new "resonances" have imaginary parts whose inverse is proportional to the lifetime of the decaying state. We analyze what happens to these resonances when a small constant electric field is applied. The results are surprising.
