Variational problems with linear growth conditions
Zusammenfassung: The direct method in the calculus of variations does not work in the non-reflexive space $W^{1,1}$, i.e. in general we cannot expect to obtain solutions of this class. There are two ways to overcome this difficulty: to pass to the dual variational problem or to consider the relaxation to the space of functions with bounded variation. Moreover, the questions of uniqueness and regularity of solutions are quite involved. For instance, a priori gradient estimates depend on a non-uniform ellipticity condition.
In the talk we will present several prominent examples of variational problems with linear growth conditions and give a short overview of the main results.
