Construction of a 2--dimensional Fermi Liquid

Zusammenfassung: A Fermi liquid is a state of a gas of (interacting) electrons that has similar behaviour as the gas would have if the electrons would not interact. L.D. Landau and others observed that one can understand many properties of metals and crystals by postulating that their electrons form a Fermi liquid.

In this talk I will describe a result of joint work with J.Feldman and E.Trubowitz that proves, from first principles of quantum statistical mechanics, that a certain class of interacting many--fermion models in two space dimensions is in fact a Fermi liquid. I will describe the precise formulation of this result, and give the main ideas of the proof, which uses multiscale analysis and renormalization.
