Akademischer RatLiterally, the German term 'Akademischer Rat' means 'Academic Councelor'. This particular kind of position seems to exist mainly in the German-speaking academic world. In my case, the position I held before having been promoted to 'Akademischer Oberrat' was a permanent academic position with civil servant status and an increased teaching duty as compared to a professor position. There also exist cases, where Akademischer Rat positions have increased administrative duties instead of increased teaching duties. Typically, Akademischer Rat positions are permanent positions with civil servant status, but there are also cases of temporary Akademischer Rat positions.
