Hardy, Sobolev and Lieb-Thirring Inequalities: Connections and Applications

Zusammenfassung: We give a review of Hardy and Sobolev inequalities and investigate their connection with Lieb-Thirring inequalities. The latter are bounds on power sums of the moduli of negative eigenvalues of Schroedinger-type operators, and play a major role in many aspects of analysis. A recent generalization of these inequalities to allow for the subtraction of the critical Hardy term provides an improved understanding of the stability of matter in quantum mechanics, which will also be briefly discussed. This talk is based on joint work with R. Frank and E. Lieb.
