On the ordering of energy levels in homogeneous magnetic fields.
Abstract: We study the energy levels of a single particle in a homogeneous magnetic field
and in an axially symmetric external potential. For potentials that are superharmonic off the
central axis, we find a general ``pseudoconcave'' ordering of the ground state energies of the
Hamiltonian restricted to the sectors with fixed angular momentum. The physical applications
include atoms and ions in strong magnetic fields. There the energies are monotone increasing
and concave in angular momentum. In the case of a periodic chain of atoms the pseudoconcavity
extends to the entire lowest band of Bloch functions.

Am 25. Mai 2001 sprach Hans-Gerd Leopold (Universität Jena) über
Eigenvalues of Elliptic Operators on Fractals: Upper Estimates.
Abstract: Let M be a finite Radon measure on the n dimensional Euclidean space with compact support
of Lebesgue measure zero. Furthermore, let B the operator, generated in a Sobolev space of order m
by the quadratic form associated to the measure M. We suppose that 2m is exceeding the dimension n.
Then B is a non-negative self-adjoint compact operator and we will give upper bounds on the
eigenvalues of B that depend on the geometry of the support of the measure M.

Am 8. Juni 2001 sprach Dr. Walter Farkas (LMU)
On Bessel Potential Spaces in the Theory of Stochastic Processes.
Abstract: It is a cornerstone in the modern theory of stochastic processes that to each
(regular) Dirichlet form one can associate a stochastic process. From the probabilistic
point of view there is a disadvantage to work with processes associated with Dirichlet spaces
because the process is only defined up to an exceptional set (sets of capacity zero).
We propose an L_p-setting to overcome this difficulty and introduce (and investigate)
certain Bessel potential spaces associated with a sub-Markovian semigroup. This allows us
to indicate and characterize a large class of Markov processes starting in every point of
the Euclidean space.

Am 20. Juni 2001 sprach Dr. Dirk Hundertmark (Caltech, Pasadena CA, U.S.A.) zum Thema

Random Quantum Hamiltonians in Strong Magnetic Fields.
Abstract: I will consider the Schr&omul;dinger operator with constant
magnetic field and ergodic random scalar potential in dimensions two and three.
I will discuss the asymptotic behavior of the integrated density of states as
the intensity of the magnetic field tends to infinity.

Am 29. Juni 2001 sprach Simone Warzel (Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg) über
Lifshitz Tails in Magnetic Fields.
Abstract: We investigate the leading low-energy fall-off of the integrated density of states
of a charged quantum particle subject to a constant magnetic field and repulsive impurities
randomly located according to Poisson's distribution. This so-called magnetic Lifshits tail
is determined for the case of two space dimensions with a perpendicular magnetic field and for
all single-impurity potentials with either super-Gaussian, Gaussian or regular sub-Gaussian decay
at infinity. While the result for regular sub-Gaussian decay coincides with the corresponding
classical one, the Lifshits tail caused by super-Gaussian decay exhibits a universal quantum behaviour.
As a consequence, Gaussian decay is proven to discriminate between quantum and classical tailing.
In the case of three space dimensions, the magnetic Lifshits tail is investigated for all impurity
potentials with super-Gaussian or Gaussian decay. Its precise form is determined for all impurity
potentials with stretched (sub-)Gaussian decay. In this case it turns out that the tail is independent
of the magnetic field and coincides, up to a logarithmic acceleration, with that for one dimension and
not too slowly decaying impurity potentials. As a by-product we determine the strong-magnetic field
asymptotics of the integrated density of states for the two-dimensional and three-dimensional situation.

Am 6. Juli 2001 sprach Prof. Dr. Werner O. Amrein (Université de Genève, Schweiz) über
Schrödinger operators affiliated to C*-algebras.
Abstract: We describe an abstract approach, using properties of C*-algebras, to the spectral
theory of self-adjoint operators. We indicate typical applications by considering spectral and
propagation properties for some classes of Schrödinger operators.

Am 20. Juli 2001 sprach Winfried Sickel (Universität Jena) zum Thema
Nemytskijoperatoren in Klassen vom Gevreyschen Typ.
Abstract: Das Studium verschiedener Probleme in der Theorie der hyperbolischen Gleichungen

Estimate of the Correlation Energy of Electrons.
